David Polly, Professor and Chair of the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, delivered the Phi Beta Kappa address. During the Spring semester, 145 College of Arts & Sciences students were inducted to membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Additionally, the Margaret Russell Edmondson Award was presented.

Michael Hamburger, Professor of Geophysics in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, delivered the Phi Beta Kappa address. Morgan Mohr, a former student of Professor Hamburger’s, who was elected to Phi Beta Kappa as undergraduate student at IU and who became a Rhodes Scholar that same year, joined the ceremony to deliver a congratulatory message. Poet Jennifer Richter delivered the Phi Beta Kappa address which was entitled "Set Free: Ex-Cons and Poetry.” Jennifer is a graduate of Indiana University and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa by Gamma of Indiana chapter in 1991. Jennifer’s recent book Threshold, was the winner of the 2009 Crab Orchard Series in Poetry Open Competition. One hundred sixty-five students were honored at the banquet.

Pratt, professor of geological sciences, delivered the Phi Beta Kappa address "Detection of biosustaining energy and nutrient cycles in the deep subsurface of Earth and Mars." One hundred twenty students were honored that evening and the hall was filled by friends, families, advisors and professors. Carter Smith Gerard was the recipient of the 2003/2004 Margaret Russell Edmondson Award for Excellence.
